The history of the whiskey produced in the Tennessee town of Lynchburg since 1866 began with the distillery founder, Jack Daniel, who introduced the still-practiced principle of charcoal mellowing using maple charcoal. The recognition as "Finest Whiskey" at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis was instrumental in Jack Daniel's international breakthrough. In 1956, the U.S. spirits conglomerate Brown-Forman acquired the Tennessee whiskey brand. The most well-known and sole product of Jack Daniel's for over a century is the "Jack Daniel's No. 7."
