Crown Royal was founded to commemorate the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939, marking the first North American trip by a British monarch. Until the year 2000, the company was part of the Seagram group, at that time the largest spirits manufacturer globally. In 2000, Crown Royal was sold to the British conglomerate Diageo. Crown Royal is among the best-selling Canadian whiskies in the United States.
