The success story of Captain Morgan began in 1944 when the Canadian company Seagram founded the Captain Morgan Rum Company and started producing rum.
Among the customers was Levy Brothers, a pharmacy from the Jamaican capital Kingston. Levy Brothers added herbs and spices to Seagram's rum and allowed it to mature further.
Samuel Bronfman, the then CEO of Seagram, enjoyed the drink so much that he acquired the distribution rights for it.
In the 1950s, Seagram sold the Captain Morgan brand to Diageo.
