The actual name of the whisky distillery is 'Knockdhu,' which means 'black hill' in English. Typically, whiskies bear the same name as their distillery. To avoid confusion with the Knockando distillery, the whiskies are sold under the brand name 'An Cnoc.'

'An Cnoc' translates to 'the hill.' The Knockdhu distillery has been in existence since 1892, founded by John Morrison. He chose the location near Knock due to the springs in the Knock Hills, which provide the distillery with naturally filtered water for production. The company is now part of the Inver House Distillers Ltd. group.
