The conglomerate is the result of a merger of three traditional companies: leather goods manufacturer Louis Vuitton, established in 1854, Moët et Chandon (champagne since 1743), and Hennessy (Cognac manufacturer since 1765). Moët and Hennessy had already merged in 1971, and the next merger occurred in 1987 between Louis Vuitton and Moët Hennessy. Among the 70 different luxury brands, with which the conglomerate generated 37.6 billion euros in revenue in 2016, are the cognacs of the Hennessy brand.
