On the same site was the old Clynelish Distillery, founded in 1819 by George Granville Levison-Gower, later Duke of Sutherland. The old distillery, however, operated for a short period and was then closed down. The current distillery has been owned by United Distillers since 1987, making it part of the Diageo spirits conglomerate since 1998. Clynelish whisky is highly popular as a single malt. The water used for it is sourced from the Clynemilton Burn river.
