Ried Lehmgrube Blaufränkisch (2020)

Winery Franz Schindler, Burgenland

13.5 %vol. / 0.75 lt

The story of this high-quality wine began in 2007 when the grapes from the oldest vines were first vinified into a pure Blaufränkisch. The vineyard "Ried Lehmgrube" lives up to its name, as the soil of this location is clayey, deep, and nutrient-rich. Situated on gentle hills with a view towards Lake Neusiedl, the vines are pampered by plenty of sunshine, yielding fully ripe and high-quality grapes year after year.

The red wine "Ried Lehmgrube" is a pure Blaufränkisch and ferments on the skins for up to two weeks. After undergoing malolactic fermentation, the young wine is then aged for up to 24 months in new and once-used barriques, which adds extra complexity and layers of flavor.

The 2020 vintage of the "Ried Lehmgrube" wine was awarded 94 points by Falstaff and ranked 3rd in Falstaff's Blaufränkisch category.

The wine displays a deep, dark color in the glass. On the nose, there are dark fruity notes of plum, prune, and some dark berries. These nuances are underscored by a spiciness derived from the oak. On the palate, there are plentiful, velvety tannins. This red wine is dense with a complex interplay of dark fruit and spice flavors, as well as mineral undertones. The finish is long-lasting and characterized by a certain elegance. As a robust red wine, this wine pairs particularly well with red meat, game meat, and hearty dishes.
